Lean manufacturing techniques, at home?

My time is valuable to me. Over the years I have slowly realized how much time I spend looking for tools. So, I started buying cheap tool boxes and placing everything I need in one box. I put it on the shelf and when I need it all of the tools and materials required are in one place. For example, if I am working on copper pipe I have a kit that contains: Torch, propane canister, striker, flux, solder, pipe cutter, pipe cleaning tool, emery paper, fireproof pad, gloves, a sharpie and a shop rag. I pull it off the shelf and go, dropping the tools back into the kit when I am finished. If I run into a job that requires another tool in the kit, I buy one and add it. It has made projects much more enjoyable. I call the habit toolkiting.
A friends wife is a process engineer for a major chip manufacturer. She overheard her husband and I discussing toolkiting, and introduced me to a well known process called lean manufacturing. Apparently, manufacturers have been doing this for quite a while. They will even produce kits in molded foam organizers with each tool laid out based on which you will use first, second, third, etc. Who knew?
